If you're coming to visit us, make a day of it. We're right in the center of town, steps from the train, and surrounded by some of my favorite places to shop, eat and wander. Below you'll find everything you need to know about getting here, plus a few of my personal Locust Valley favorites.
Getting Here

By Car
Locust Valley is on the North Shore of Long Island, about 30 miles from Manhattan. Plug 43 The Plaza, Locust Valley, NY 11560 into your GPS and you'll land right at our door.

Parking
Couldn't be easier. There is a large parking lot adjacent to The Atelier with plenty of parking. Park and come see us.

By Train
Take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Oyster Bay Branch to Locust Valley. You'll transfer at Jamaica, and once you arrive, The Atelier is just steps from the station.
Another easy option: Take the LIRR directly from Penn Station or Grand Central to Manhasset, then grab an Uber to The Atelier. It's about a 20-minute ride from the station and can sometimes be the simpler route.

Flying In
The closest major airports are LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International (JFK). From either airport, we recommend a car or rideshare to Locust Valley.

The original Atelier.
Locust Valley has been home for my family for more than a decade, since we left NYC, so when I decided to open The Red Thread Atelier, there really wasn't anywhere else I considered. It's a tiny town on the North Shore of Long Island with a great mix of old-school charm, beautiful shops, good food and people who actually know each other. The Atelier opened here in 2023 and has grown into something much bigger than I imagined, but it still feels very much like a neighborhood shop.
One of the best things about visiting The Atelier is that you don't have to come all the way to Locust Valley just for needlepoint. Grab lunch, wander through town, do a little shopping and make a day of it. These are the places I actually go, send friends and tell out-of-towners not to miss.

Eat + Drink
- Karmic Grind — Our local coffee spot and an easy first stop before coming to see us.
- Basil Leaf Cafe — A Locust Valley institution for Italian and a relaxing lunch or dinner.
- Buckram Stables Cafe — Old-school Locust Valley in the best way. A longtime neighborhood favorite for lunch or a casual dinner.
- Piñons Pizza Company — Really good pizza, great salads and a fun spot for an early dinner.
Shop
- Ooh La Shoppe — A great little women's boutique right here in town.
- Valley Attic — For a good treasure hunt and one-of-a-kind finds.
- Royal Native — A Locust Valley favorite for shopping local.
- The Locust Valley Bookstore — Because every good small town should have a bookstore.
- Louise — Another favorite local stop that's absolutely worth popping into while you're here.
See + Do
- Planting Fields Arboretum — One of the prettiest spots on the North Shore. Wander the gardens, explore the greenhouses and take a peek inside Coe Hall. Especially beautiful in the spring and fall.
- Sagamore Hill — Theodore Roosevelt's former home in Oyster Bay and a little dose of local history. Tour the house or just walk the grounds and trails.
- Old Westbury Gardens — A gorgeous Gold Coast estate with beautiful formal gardens and a serious Great Gatsby feel. Worth the short drive, especially on a beautiful day.
A Little Further Afield
- 2 Spring, Oyster Bay — If you're making a full day of it, head over to Oyster Bay for dinner. A beautiful spot for something a little more special.
- Youngs Farm — A North Shore classic and always worth the detour.
- Americana Manhasset — If your idea of "a little shopping" involves Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton, the Americana is about 20 minutes away. Consider yourself warned.
